Bernabeu chiefs are said to be keen on luring Pochettino to Spain after the sacking of Julen Lopetegui

Real Madrid will step up their pursuit of Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino by offering to double his wages.

Pochettino, the Argentine, is high on Los Blancos’ shortlist of managers to succeed Julen Lopetegui, who was sacked by the Bernabeu club following their humiliating 5-1 Clasico defeat to Barcelona.

The current Tottenham manager is rated as one of the favourites to become Real’s next permanent manager, and the La Liga giants are ready to make their move to tempt him away from north London.

According to The Sun, Real will offer to double Pochettino’s current wage packet to an eye-watering £17million-a-year – a salary that will make the 46-year-old one of the best-paid managers in the world.

It is believed Real want to offer Pochettino a five-year deal, worth a total £85million to the former Espanyol and Southampton coach.

Real president Florentino Perez wants to rush through the appointment of Pochettino now, but will wait until the summer to get his man if Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, refuses to entertain negotiations.

Ramon Calderon, Madrid’s former president, told talkSPORT yesterday that Pochettino is the perfect fit for the Bernabeu club. However, he revealed that Perez favours a move for Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, with contact between the two parties made ‘over the last few years’.

Former Real Madrid midfielder Santiago Solari has been installed as the club’s caretaker manager following Lopetegui’s dismissal, being promoted from his role as Castilla head coach.

He takes charge of his first match on Wednesday evening, with Los Blancos visiting Melilla of the Segunda Division B in the first leg of their Copa del Rey round-of-32 clash.
